Keeping a roof over your head, no matter what

Always home
An empty house can seem sad and lonely. But a home — that’s different. It’s your place, an architectural shell you’ve filled with the beauty of life, the emotion of living. And, whether it’s your first home or your dream home, the most important fact is … it’s your home.
At least, it is your home for as long as you continue to pay the mortgage.  That’s why you budget carefully and make those mortgage payments each month. But, what if you couldn’t? What if sickness, injury or death made it impossible to keep up with the mortgage payments? Would your family be able to stay in their home? Fortunately there are ways to help ensure your family will always have a roof over their head, regardless of what happens to you. But, what’s best for your situation? Let’s take a look.
Traditional mortgage insurance insures your mortgage and will pay off the total outstanding amount of your mortgage when you die. Most lending institutions offer mortgage insurance as part of their  mortgage options and they’ll usually integrate the premiums into your total mortgage payments. With mortgage insurance, your lender owns the policy and if you find a better mortgage rate at another lending institution, you usually need to re-qualify at the new lending institution.
Unlike a life insurance policy, the amount of coverage decreases as you pay down your mortgage. If anything happens to you, the death benefit is automatically used to pay off the outstanding mortgage balance. A personal life insurance policy insures you, not your mortgage. You determine the amount of coverage you want — it’s not tied to the value of your mortgage. You own the policy so you have the freedom to name your beneficiaries and they can choose how to use the proceeds. You can switch to another lending institution without jeopardizing your coverage and your coverage doesn’t decrease as your mortgage is paid down, which means that for every dollar of mortgage principal repaid, there will be additional insurance proceeds available to your family at a time when they may need it the most.
Also, your policy can be customized with the options and features you choose, which may include having your premiums waived if you become disabled. Managing your money Comprehensive continued on next page Disability insurance protects your ability to continue to make mortgage payments by roviding money if you can’t work. You may have a group plan at work that includes disability insurance. But, group coverage ceases when you leave your job and if you’re self-employed you may not have a plan. A group plan may also have limits on the amounts paid out in the event of disability, and may have a more restrictive definition which may limit your coverage. In addition, if your health improves, your benefits may stop, forcing you return to work prematurely. A personal disability plan can supplement other disability benefits in ways that make sense for you.
Critical illness insurance generally pays you a one-time lump sum benefit amount if you are diagnosed   with a critical illness or condition as defined in your policy. Critical illness insurance is not tied to a mortgage or any other personal or business loan. You usually can use the benefit to help pay off your outstanding mortgage loan, make payments while you recover, or for any other personal or business need. If you want your home to be a secure no matter what happens to you, having enough insurance to cover your mortgage debt is essential. And if you want to be able to maintain your family’s lifestyle come what may, disability and critical illness insurance are equally important. We can show you how insurance can play an important role in bringing your financial security plan home to stay.

Henry of Navarre

Barbarity was rife throughout France in the 16th century, as religious wars raged between Catholics and Huguenots, culminating in the political coupling and arranged marriage between Henri of Navarre and the king's sister Margot. Henri (Julien Boisselier) was young and handsome. Margot (Armelle Deutsch) was headstrong and seductive. In bed, they were like wild cats, but this is not a remake of Patrice Chereau’s magnificent La Reine Margot. It is a story of power, deceit, treachery, courage, sex and murder.

At two-and-a-half hours the film is long and you begin to feel it during the final quarter. However, Henri’s life is so full and accomplished, its trials and tragedies so profound, that time is seldom wasted. The convoluted plotting within the French court is Machiavellian, orchestrated by the black widow, Catherine de Medici (Hannelore Hoger), mother of all evils and three sons, the cowardly king (Ulrich Noethen), his gay brother and the ill one who dies.

Henri spends most of his young life fighting and so yearns for peace. Catherine also desires an end to the wars, not only because they are expensive but because they are unsuccessful. She charms the Protestant conqueror from the rural south to embrace the sophistication of the Parisian court with his ravishing bride, while scheming behind his back a fearful massacre on St Bartholomew's Day, during which 30,000 Huguenots, including Henri’s wedding guests, are butchered.

The film is as rich in imagery as it is diverse in character. The action sequences are brutal and close to the body. The plot twists and dives under convenient stereotypes, avoiding the obvious, such as giving Henri a superstar persona, rather than presenting him as a thoughtful, intelligent, contradictory, flawed, flirtatious defender of justice and religious freedom.
“Let reason govern.”

Can you really become a saver?

There are a million ways to spend your money but here's how you can learn to save

Money. Love it or hate it, no one is exempt from its influence. With food to buy, bills to pay and debt to consider, it’s not surprising many of us are at a loss when it comes to managing money and planning for the future. Sara Kinnear, Senior Tax and Estate Planning Specialist with the Investor’s Group, shares some tips for all the single ladies who know it’s time to make a financial plan but don’t know where to start.

SET PERSONAL GOALS
“The hallmark of any successful plan is setting clear goals” says Sara Kinnear. Start by considering your circumstances and stage in life. Whether you want to pay off your student loan, buy a house or pay for your child’s education, set goals “that stem beyond but include the immediate future.” Write down your goals and keep them somewhere they will be seen to keep you on track. The key here is to keep your eye on the prize!

START NOW
Unlike the decision to cut your own bangs, it’s never too late to start saving for the future. “A common mistake for many Canadians including single women is to assume that they don’t have the wealth or cash-flow necessary to invest, or that they have not started early enough to accumulate the funds to reach their financial goals and now it’s too late,” says Sara Kinnear. “Single women may also be working against additional odds as single mothers and household heads or recovering from divorce and assume that their more immediate financial obligations won’t allow for them to focus beyond.” The good news is, it’s never too late to start! “Working with a financial expert, you can determine the best way to manage your current financial obligations while setting aside funds that will grow for your future goals and retirement plans.”

KEEP IT REAL
If your goals are unrealistic, you will likely have a hard time sticking to them. As uncomfortable as it may be, honesty is absolutely the only policy when it comes to your financial well-being. “Talk to a financial expert who can help you make realistic goals that are in-line with your spending, saving and investing habits.” Sara cautions those who are new to the workforce “not to fall into the trap of overspending. Live within your means, and then some.”

TO THINE OWN SAVINGS BE TRUE
Sara recommends ensuring “that a portion of your income is automatically diverted into your short-term and/or long-term savings.” NO EXCEPTIONS! No one said it was going to be easy but if you want to get to where you’re going on time, you don’t want to be stopping at every roadside attraction and spending money on souvenirs. By paying yourself first, you’re taking control of your financial destiny; isn’t that worth more than a sweater you don’t even need?
In the end, managing your money isn’t so scary and it’s not just for people who have more money than they know how to spend. It’s for everyone, including you. So take these tips from Sara Kinnear and get your save on! Your future-self will thank you.

The Pagan Queen

A controversial film about the end of the old pagan world in central Europe, THE PAGAN QUEEN is based on the Bohemian  legend of Libuse, the Slavic queen of 8th century Bohemia. Gifted with supernatural powers, a visionary and a seer, this extraordinary woman was able to see the future and in a turbulent time of cultural change founded the modern city of Prague. Libuse ruled as a woman over the tribes of the region with her two beautiful sisters Kazi and Teta and an army of women under the command of her best friend, the Amazon Vlasta. When the peaceful community of farmers is under attack by raiders and split into different parties of power hungry landowners, Libuse is forced into marriage by her own people. Desperate she elects her long time lover, the charismatic ploughman Premysl, to become her husband and king. Soon Premyl takes over the new kingdom and rules with an iron fist, enslaving the formerly free farmers. But Libuse's friend Vlasta, who is secretly in love with her, refuses to follow the new leader and with her maiden army declares war on the men of Bohemia. The film is based on the 18th and 19th century romantic German fairytales and plays by Johann Karl Musaeus, Clemens Brentano and Franz Grillparzer who emphasize the supernatural elements of the story and combine that with psychology and philosophy. This approach caused a massive scandal in the Czech Republic during the theatrical run of the film.

#1 Tip For healthy Cat

If your dog or cat is having the occasional case of constipation or diarrhea, one of the things that might help is canned pumpkin. Yes canned pumpkin in its pureed form (NOT pumpkin pie filling) is a fantastic stool softener which makes it a good natural remedy for constipation. It often helps with upset stomach or indigestion for both cats and dogs. It is very rich in fibre and adding just one or two teaspoonfuls to your pet’s food often gets the system moving in no time. Dogs will occasionally want to eat it directly and that’s fine too. Sometimes though, finicky cats and dogs won’t touch it no matter what you do.

On the opposite end of things is diarrhea. Since the dietary fibre in canned pumpkin absorbs water, it can be a great help to a cat or dog that has diarrhea. Some pet owners report that it firms up their pet’s loose stools or diarrhea within a few hours. Again one to two teaspoonfuls is all that is needed.
N.B. It should be noted that both diarrhea and constipation can both be very serious and require immediate veterinary care depending on the cause. Whatever the cause, diarrhea or constipation lasting more than 24-36 hours requires vet care.

Mother Nature Medicine - Slippery Elm Bark

Slippery elm, also known as ulmus fulva, red elm, sweet elm or moose elm, is a tree belonging to species of elm and native to Appalachian mountains of eastern North America. It is a medium sized deciduous tree that grows up to a height of 50 feet and possesses spreading branches, forming an open crown. Its foliage is 12 - 18 cm long, having a rough texture, coarsely double serrate margin and an inclined base. The tree blooms flowers in early spring at the tips of the branches in a dense cluster form. It has a dark brown, rough and fissured outer bark while its mucilaginous inner bark which comprises the main health benefits of slippery elm bark is white with a distinctive scent. This was just a brief insight about the slippery elm tree, now let us try to know more about this highly useful bark, followed by slippery elm bark benefits.

Slippery Elm Bark

As said before, the major uses and benefits of slippery elm bark lie in the bark's mucilage, a sticky, viscous substance that oozes from the bark when comes in contact with water. This mucilage is enriched with numerous nutrients and some non-toxic, easy to digest complex carbohydrates. It comprises vitamins and minerals like beta-sitosterol, campesterol, tannin, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, beta-carotene and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and C. In the spring, the bark is collected, dried and converted into either a coarse powder form used as poultices or a fine powder used to prepare a mucilaginous drink.

Slippery Elm Bark Benefits and Uses

Slippery elm bark is well know for its softening and healing effects, hence, it serves as an excellent demulcent, emollient, expectorant and diuretic. Below listed are some of the benefits and uses of slippery elm bark.
For its soothing and softening properties, slippery elm is commonly used as a mucilaginous herb to smooth the mucous membranes which helps curing and soothing cough and sore throat.

For its healing properties, slippery bark is generally used as an effective poultices or medical dressing to reduce pain and inflammation caused by wounds, boils, ulcers, burns and any other type of injury.
Being high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, slippery elm bark is ground and often used as a porridge. It has a taste and consistency just like an oatmeal, and so many people have incorporated slippery elm bark in their routine diet.

Slippery elm bark powder is often used as a home remedy or herbal medicine for tooth decay and pain. All you need to do is to put a pinch of this powder into a hollow tooth and within a couple of days, the pain as well as the decaying will stop.
Slippery elm bark is extremely useful in treating various gastrointestinal problems and imbalances. It neutralizes the stomach acids, boosts the adrenal glands, soothes the irritation or ulceration of the stomach and intestines by forming a protective barrier between the ulcer and the infected or damaged stomach acid.
Slippery elm bark also aids in digestion and helps clean the colon which further helps in relieving the pain or inflammation due to colon or stomach ulcers. Hence, slippery elm benefits in treating numerous intestinal imbalances or disorders including duodenal ulcers, gastritis, diarrhea, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids and heartburn.

Besides these health benefits, the bark is also used to prepare burial caskets, rope, chords, fence posts, furniture, and even some musical instruments like drums.
Apart from these slippery elm bark benefits and uses, this beneficial bark can also be used to treat cancer, heart disease, diseases related to female organs. Another key feature of slippery elm bark is that it possesses no known side effects especially if consumed under a doctor's supervision. Now that you know what are the benefits of slippery elm bark, i am sure you will not forget to incorporate this essential herb in your lifestyle.

How to pay your bills and invest, too!

There’s no doubt about it, making ends meet is tough. And getting ahead? – Well, for many Canadians, that’s a desperate dream for tomorrow when every day brings the reality of mortgage payments, car loans, lease payments, large credit card balances, and other demands on your hard won earnings.

Sure, you’d like to start an investment program or add to the small investments you’ve already made, but there just never seems to be anything left over once you’ve taken care of the essentials. And in a world that runs on credit, it’s too easy to carry too much debt in too many places. If you’re staying awake at nights trying to map a way out of the dreaded debt spiral, to say nothing of stretching your income to cover an investment program that could help you realize your dreams for the future, debt consolidation may be just the ticket.

Debt consolidation can increase your ability to invest Debt consolidation simply means paying off a number of higher interest rate loans or other high-cost debt by taking out a single loan for a consolidated overall lower monthly payment. You can choose to consolidate such unsecured debts as medical bills, car payments, education loans, credit card payments or lines of credit – and the benefit is a single, more affordable monthly payment, that is usually much lower than the many monthly payments you were making previously. It’s an effective way to regain control of your finances, ease your cash management, generate savings and reduce stress – as well as establishing a repayment plan that will move you beyond simply servicing your balances to actually eliminating them.

If you own a home, you can consider consolidating your debt using a home equity loan. Your loan is secured by your home and there’s no doubt you’ll be paying a much lower managing your money interest rate than you do on your credit cards which can range from 19 percent to over 28 percent for a retail card. By keeping your amortization period the same, but with a lower interest rate, you’ve created additional cash flow that can be used towards other financial goals.

An easy investment strategy that works once you’ve got your debt under control, it’s time to bring discipline and consistency to your investment life.

An easy way to do that – and enjoy long-term investment growth – is through
dollar cost averaging. This simply means making regularly scheduled investments for a set amount of dollars. It’s a trouble-free investment plan that delivers some powerful benefits:
1.Your investments are automatic – you choose an amount that is debited from your bank account and invested on your behalf on a regular basis, such as each month.
2. You are free from scrambling to buy lump sum investments at irregular intervals in an attempt to ‘buy low and sell high’; your automated investments take place on a regular basis.
3. You are able to acquire a greater number of mutual fund units – when the price is lower and a lesser number when the price is higher.
4. Over the longer term, your average cost per unit may be lower. Dollar cost averaging is a great way to ramp up your RRSP nest egg – and, along with debt consolidation, is one of the many personal financial solutions that can make your dreams for tomorrow realistically achievable through the actions you’re taking today. We can help you gain control of your financial life and improve your prospects for the future.

March 24, 2011 — Take 22,000 high-definition photographs, a geomagnetic storm and some incredible talent and what do you get? A two-minute video of the Aurora Borealis as you’ve never seen it before.
Photographer Terje Sorgjerd braved -25 degree Celsius (-15 F) temperatures to capture this mesmerizing collection of photographs. Then, by assembling the 22,000 photos, he created a time-lapse video of the rich color and dynamic shapes of the Northern Lights that would normally be difficult to see. Adding the atmospheric Hans Zimmer/Lisa Gerrard song “Now We Are Free” from the movie
Gladiator to the mix, and Sorgjerd has created a masterpiece.

Lesser known tax benefits for students and their families

Funding an education is expensive and important. Studies and real life experiences clearly
show that those pricy years of education will typically pay dividends in the form of more
personally rewarding and better paying jobs. At any time, and especially these days, students
and their families need to make every penny productive. Yet many overpay their taxes because
they overlook lesser known tax benefits like these.

Tax deductions for students
• Full time post secondary student who move to go to school may be able to claim movingexpenses.
• Students may deduct expenses from scholarships, bursaries, research grants and
employment or self-employment income.
Child care expenses may be claimed by the higher earning spouse when the lower
earning spouse is enrolled in either secondary or post-secondary education. Limits
increase for a single parent or when both members of a two parent family are attending
school full time.

Tax credits for students
• Canada employment credit – available on the first $1,000 of employment income.
• Tuition fees credit – for fees of over $100 per year paid to a Canadian university,
college or other educational institution; if attending school outside Canada, the
student must be enrolled in a university course of 13 weeks or longer leading toward
a bachelor degree or higher.
• Education and textbook credit – available to students enrolled in a qualifying
education program at a university, college or other designated educational institution.
o Unused tuition, education and textbook credits may be carried forward by the
student for use in future years or transferred to a spouse, supporting parent
or grandparent to a maximum of $5,000 minus the amount used by the
student.
• Public transit credit – available for monthly or longer public transit passes; parents
may claim for a dependant under 19.
• Student loans interest – must be claimed by the student; unused claims can be
carried forward for five years.

Other tax efficient approaches for financing an education can include making an interest-free
loan to a student and using the right Registered Education Savings Plan and Lifelong LearningPlan withdrawal strategies. Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have also introduced tax
credit programs for the recovery of tuition fees after graduation if the graduate stays in the
province.

Mother Nature Medicine - Sheep Sorrel

(Rumex acetosella) has been a folk remedy for cancer for centuries

Sheep Sorrel belongs to the buckwheat family, and grows wild throughout most of the world. It seeks open pastures, rocky areas, and the shoulders of country roads. It is considered to be a common weed throughout the U.S.

Sheep Sorrel plants have been a folk remedy for cancer for centuries, both in Europe and America. Researchers have observed that it can help break down tumors and it can alleviate some chronic conditions and degenerative diseases.

Sheep sorrel is a rich source of oxalic acid, sodium, potassium, iron, manganese, phosphorous, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. The combination of these vitamins and minerals promote the glandular health of the entire body. Sheep Sorrell also contains carotenoids and chlorophyll, as well as citric, malic, and tannic and tartaric acids.

The chlorophyll can serve many functions in the body. For one, it carries oxygen throughout the bloodstream. This is significant because cancer cells cannot live in the presence of oxygen. Chlorophyll closely resembles hemoglobin in its functioning: both are capable of carrying oxygen to every cell of the organism. When chlorophyll molecules carry oxygen through the bloodstream chromosome damage can be inhibited to effectively block cancer. Chlorophyll also helps block germs and harmful bacteria.

Chlorophyll also can help patients cope better with chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It can reduce the damage of radiation burns and increase the resistance to X-rays. Also, chlorophyll can improve cardiovascular health. Chlorophyll also can purify the liver, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the growth of new tissues. Sheep sorrel also contains silicon, which is a necessary element in nerves and the myelin sheath that covers them.

Besides the properties listed above, sheep sorrel is a digestive regulator, meaning that it can act as an anti-diarrhea agent as well as a laxative, depending on the health of the digestive tract. Sheep sorrel is a cleansing agent, a diuretic, and a detoxifier. Due to the high vitamin C content, it has also been used to treat Scurvy. The oxalic acid in sheep sorrel combines with calcium to aid in its digestive assimilation and it stimulates the intestines, thus helping a sluggish gut regain normal functioning. Oxalic acid also seems to promote faster blood coagulation time, which makes it helpful to control hemorrhages. The herb also contains several anthraquinones that are effective antioxidants and radical scavengers, again helping with cancer treatment.

Sheep sorrel was considered the most active herb in essiac for stimulating cellular regeneration, detoxification and cleansing, based on reports by Rene Caisse and her doctor colleague Dr. Charles Brusch. The two did studies with mice bearing abnormal growths on the original eight herb formula at the Cambridge Medical Research center a couple of decades ago.

A side benefit is that sheep sorrel contains significant levels of phytoestrogens similar to the isoflavone phytoestrogens common to red clover, licorice and soy. These phytoestrogens are known for their health promoting properties.

Sheep sorrel has no known side effects in the doses recommended for eight herb essiac tea.
